Our Mission
UWALS was founded in November 2016 out of a need identified in the community for Arts events which could be accessed locally - public transport making it difficult to get into Skipton, let alone Leeds or Harrogate. UWALS's mission is to improve access to the arts within the Upper Wharfedale area by the provision and support of lectures, performances, entertaining talks, workshops and other associated activities. Such events hosted locally create a feeling of community and are important in addressing rural isolation. UWALS also aims run groups that meet regularly such as the Funk Wire, Writers and The Discover Shakespeare Project, thus ensuring a continuity of provision.
As UWALS has developed, it has become clear that the ease of accessing events and the opportunity to meet other people have become as important as the events themselves. This has led to UWALS dropping any paid membership requirement and creating a ‘members’ email group which consists of members of the Discover Shakespeare and Writers’ groups as well as the Funk Wire, included also are people who have supported UWALS events in the past. At any point, people may drop out of this email group. It is members of this group who always have the first chance of places at UWALS events.
